critical contextual studies 1
The first contextual studies was about the difference between certain kinds of media which where cinema, TV and games and whether the invention of the remote killed cinema. Cinema is mainly a passive experience as once the film is turned on you just sit and watch. The invention of the TV brought a sort of cinema experience to every home where they had live broadcasts. With the invention of the controller it meant that shows can be paused and forwarded which changed the experience from passive to interactive. This then lead to games that are completely interactive.
Something that was touched upon was a form of story telling that consists of three acts which is commonly used in story telling, especially by Hollywood. This kind of story telling starts with act 1 where the character and world is introduced, followed by act two where conflict takes place and then finally act three where the resolution takes place along with the overall message or change happens. At the end everyone had to come up with a story using this story telling system in less then fifty words. My one was "Once upon a time a tall man walks into a red room. He falls over a chair and then leaves by walking around another chair". I made this story simple and short but it does take up three acts starting with the introduction of the main character an environment. This was followed by the conflict or problem where he falls over a chair and then finally learns to look and walk around the chair to mark the resolution.
